A subtle movement in your daily routine, such as sitting on the sofa or fluffing your favorite duvet can raise a small puff of dust that sets off a reaction that brings hours of congestion, even fits of sneezing.

The EEU Dust Mite Unit is a unique tool designed to reproduce real world levels of allergen for clinical studies. It allows for the replication of the environment in which symptoms will manifest themselves in volunteer participants. The participants-5 to 45 per session-are exposed to their suspected allergen in a controlled environment, where physicians and researchers detect and record their response to different medications and doses.

EEU clinical testing has yielded consistent, accurate results in identifying triggers of
respiratory allergies. This research has shown that participants are able to detect different responses to medications and doses, and the results are reproducible even when the studies are held at different times of the year, and years apart. The result is that highly reliable conclusions are drawn that can be applied in medical practice.

Dust mites in particular are a contributor to allergic reactions and asthma in people, accounting for 70% of respiratory allergies. This controlled exposure method is invaluable for providing medical researchers with effective data for detecting allergy symptoms triggers and medication treatment response. However, the EEU Dust Mite Room can also be used for other specialized exposures for testing and treatment studies, for example reaction to exposure of various natural elements pollutants, and co-exposures.
